When it comes to choosing a Jeep rental in Moab, Utah, there are a number of things you need to consider before starting your journey. I have rented from numerous Jeep rental companies in Moab, with some good experiences and one which was particularly bad and expensive. If you want to rent a Jeep in Moab, take a moment to consider the following:

  1. The Capability of Rental Jeeps in Moab
  2. Your Personal Off-roading Comfort Zone
  3. Moab Trail Selection
  4. Moab Jeep Rental Requirements
  5. Moab Seasonality

Moab Jeep rental capability

Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned off-roader, we can tell you that the build of the Jeep is very important for a fun day off-road. When renting a jeep in Moab we recommend the bigger is better motto. Opt for a Jeep Rubicon rental with 37-inch tires, lockers, sway bar disconnects, and a 3.5” lift. While many trails can be done on 35-inch tires or a smaller lift, you will need to be even more careful, and you could receive damage which is not the type of day you are looking to have. A setup like we recommend makes Finns & things a cakewalk, but can also take an adventurous driver up famous trails like Poison Spider or Hell’s Revenge with confidence.

Your personal off-roading comfort zone

Be honest with yourself. You are on vacation and want to have fun – not be stressed out. If you feel confident in your ability to drive a new vehicle over large rocks and sandy washes then by all means grab a Jeep rental in Moab and hit the road! If you’d love to experience the trails but want to be free of responsibility then check out a guided tour – most companies offer these as well and they are a great way to experience mother nature’s amusement park. As a third option, if you feel pretty confident but don’t want full responsibility, try a follow-along tour where a professional driver leads you in a separate Jeep and you follow their line and can ask for help if needed. All three of these options are fun and will lead you to feel more confident in your off-roading skills!

Moab Trail Selection

Whether you research online, through the Moab bible, or ask your Jeep rental shop in Moab, make sure you know what to expect before you select a trail. Some trails are no more than a flat dirt road through beautiful scenery. Other trails are cliffside hundred-foot drop-offs! Ask questions and be real with yourself because being terrified is usually not one’s idea of a good vacation. Our recommendation for the perfect trail in Moab is Finns & Things. It has a wonderful combination of the landscapes of Moab with some challenging obstacles and steep inclines and declines. A well-equipped rental Jeep in Moab will have no trouble at all and yet it will still feel like a challenge.

Moab Jeep Rental Requirements

If you plan to rent a Jeep in Moab, there are a few rules. First of all, you need to be at least 21 years old. You also need to have current full-coverage auto insurance and a valid driver’s license. If you are not a U.S. resident, you can purchase separate insurance to cover your rental. Many Jeep rental shops in Moab, Utah, also offer tire & glass protection in case someone kicks a rock up into your windshield or somehow you pop a tire.

Moab, Utah Seasonality

There isn’t a bad time to visit Moab. I’ve been in 100+ degree weather and below 20-degree weather and had a perfect time in both cases because I was prepared. However, most people like to visit in the Spring (mid-February to May) or Fall (Labor Day to Thanksgiving) when the desert temperatures aren’t too extreme. If you do plan on visiting during these high seasons, we recommend you book a few months in advance, and if you want to book a group of multiple Jeeps, plan about 6 months ahead of your trip. The Summer and Winter months are less busy and you should be ok to book one to two weeks before you arrive.

Our Recommended Jeep Rental Shop in Moab

We have rented from Twisted Jeeps in Moab multiple times. The owners, Nick and Joe, are in business because they love meeting their customers and hearing about their Jeeping experiences. They are there to offer trail advice or come and get you if something goes wrong. Their Jeeps are new and well-maintained and built to make your trip a successful one.

We took the time to interview Joe from Twisted Jeeps and ask him every question we could think of. Watch this video to learn more about why we chose Twisted Jeeps for our Jeep rental in Moab, Utah.

Jeep Golf Course – Deer Run – Berlin, Maryland http://www.jeepdaily.com/jeep-golf-course-deer-run-berlin-maryland/ Wed, 06 Jun 2018 04:26:14 +0000 http://www.jeepdaily.com/?p=1119 deer-run-jeep-golf-course

Deer Run Golf Course in Berlin, Maryland, is mixing golf with Jeeps! That’s right, no more underpowered golf carts driving down perfectly paved paths. Deer Run allows you to drive your own Jeep and blaze a trail on their 9 hole course. If you don’t own a Jeep, they can rent you one so you and the family can experience the offroad fun while golfing.

Ed Colbert owned Deer Run Golf Course for over 20 years but when his wife fell ill, he shut the doors. It sat vacant for the past 3 years when his son-in-law Justin Hearne came up with a crazy idea…turn the course into a more creative venture, one that involves offroading in a Jeep. Justin believes this new concept which is “one step up from mini golf” will bring younger people into the game.

The golf biz is tough and this move is not just about fun – it’s also saving the club a lot of money. Hearne said they should save up to $50,000 in cart maintenance by not having to operate 75 golf carts. They will have 3 Jeeps available to rent if you don’t have your own and are also planning a frisbee golf course for the future. They also are rooted in the community and run a lot of charity events. If you are near the Berlin, Maryland, area, go ahead and check it out and #jeepdailyblog on Instagram when you snap that pic.

2019 Jeep Truck Price Starting at $45,000?!?! http://www.jeepdaily.com/2019-jeep-truck-price-starting-at-45000/ Thu, 24 May 2018 05:21:14 +0000 http://www.jeepdaily.com/?p=1111 2019-jeep-truck-price

Will the 2019 Jeep truck, aka Scrambler, price start at $45,000? FCA Authority and a few other blogs are reporting that their sources say it’s true. This would be kind of unimaginable and devastating to me personally. I have been dreaming of this vehicle for years and assumed it would follow the same pricing structure as the new JL, give or take a few thousand bucks.

We know the new Jeep truck will ship in 4-Door form. A base 4-Door Sport starts at $30,995. Is there that much more steel in a truck bed that warrants $14,000? The suspension has been spied before and is very similar to a RAM suspension. Has that much new engineering gone into the Jeep truck that warrants $14,000 more than a JLU? Is Jeep just cashing in on the fact that all their competitors get $40k all day for basic crew cab trucks?

Think of it this way – a new 4-Door Jeep Wrangler JL Rubicon starts at $40,995. This is the top-of-the-line model with locking differentials, upgraded suspension, bigger wheels/tires, etc. etc. The 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL Rubicon can also tow a respectable 3500 lbs. and has decent interior cargo room for most people. So how is the 2019 Jeep Scrambler going to start in the mid-$40,000 range? Is it coming decked out with all the bells and whistles? Is it really a RAM truck with a Jeep body? I know this is all rumor mill stuff, but I don’t want to wait another year to find out I can’t afford my dream vehicle!

I hope Chrysler hasn’t decided to cash in to a point where true Jeep fans can’t get into a 2019 Jeep truck. All I want is a stripped down JLU with a bed on it. I want to take it to Moab, do a few trails, and enjoy my Jeep for it’s Jeepness. And also be able to throw some bikes and mulch in the back on a weekend. Please don’t let this rumor be true.

2010-2018 Jeep Wrangler Gorilla Glass Windshield http://www.jeepdaily.com/2018-jeep-wrangler-jl-gets-gorilla-glass-windshield/ Wed, 25 Apr 2018 04:02:19 +0000 http://www.jeepdaily.com/?p=1101 2010-2018-gorilla-glass-windshields

Mopar just announced a 2010-2018 Jeep Wrangler Gorilla Glass replacement windshield! No more rock chips that turn into long cracks that make you fail your inspection. Hopefully, no more $25 insurance premiums down in Moab either!

If you aren’t familiar with Gorilla Glass, it’s the same technology on modern cellphones which I think is a bad example since I manage to break my iPhone screen yearly. Luckily I found a cool video from Ford where they developed Gorilla Glass for the Ford GT and fired iceballs out of a cannon at a windshield.

Mopar is very confident the Gorilla Glass will protect you from the following:

Sharp Impact

  • Typically small sharp stone impact

  • Characteristic “star” (aka radial) crack

  • The crack extends fully through the outer glass ply (surfaces one and two)

Blunt Impact

  • Typically small blunt rock/debris impact

  • Characteristic “bullseye” flaw, may see surrounding star crack

  • Crack is on surface one of outer ply, may extend to surface two of the outer ply

Biaxial Flexure

  • The larger blunt object like hail or stone

  • Sharp impact on surface one

  • Long cracks “running” from a central point

  • Crack is commonly on inner ply surface four, sometimes on outer ply surface two

If you find yourself getting tired of the $200+ cost for an aftermarket Jeep Wrangler windshield, maybe you’ll want to upgrade to Gorilla Glass next time. A quick internet search shows the price at $350+, so if you find yourself hitting the trails often or having trucks on the highway ruining your day, it might be the solution for you. 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL Exhaust Systems http://www.jeepdaily.com/2018-jeep-wrangler-jl-exhaust-kits/ Mon, 23 Apr 2018 14:03:49 +0000 http://www.jeepdaily.com/?p=1087 jeep-wrangler-jl-exhaust-systems

Magnaflow and aFE have both released exhaust systems for the 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL. These Jeep exhaust systems will give your new JL a throatier and deeper sound as well as up to 9 extra horsepower. Let’s take a closer look at each one and you can decide which is right for you!

jeep-jl-exhaust-system

This Magnaflow MF Series exhaust system for the Jeep Wrangler JL is made in America and is built to last. Whether you are hoping to conserve fuel or utilize the extra horsepower, this Jeep JL exhaust system will allow your engine to operate more freely and give you the performance or economy you desire. But let’s be honest, when you hear a throatier exhaust, it’s hard to go light on the go pedal. The M/F19385 exhaust system is available at Nomadic Offroad Supply with free shipping. Here are a few specs:

  • 18-Current Wrangler JL, 2 & 4 Door
  • 3.6L V6 engine
  • Dual 4″ polished exhaust tips
  • All mandrel bent tubing
  • 409 Stainless steel construction
  • Increased horsepower and torque
  • 2.5″ diameter pipe
  • Straight through muffler
  • Dual split rear exit
  • Lifetime warranty on construction
  • Made in the USA

afe-jeep-wrangler-jl-exhaust-system

Next up we have the aFe Jeep Wrangler JL exhaust system. The main difference between this one and the Magnaflow is clearance. aFe calls their exhaust system a “high tuck” and when you look at the tail pipe on the aFe compared to the Magnaflow, you can see a real clearance difference on ascent/descent angles. Plus, aFe comes right out and tells us that their system will give you an extra 9HP/8 lb-ft of torque.  The only downside of the aFe system is the act that you can’t really see the mod. That’s the entire point of this system because it’s built for true offroading, but some still might prefer the Magnaflow because it’s fun to see the dollars you put into your rig. Whichever you choose, you will experience more power and a better sound in your Jeep Wrangler JL. Here are some specs on the aFe Jeep Wrangler JL exhaust system.

  • 18-Current Wrangler JL, 4-Door
  • 3.6L V6 engine
  • Exhaust tip not included
  • 409 Stainless steel
  • +9 HP and +8 lbs. x ft. Torque max gains
  • 2-1/2″ mandrel bent, 409 stainless steel tubing
  • High-quality stainless steel band clamps
  • Hi-Tuck design for long travel clearance and greater approach and departure angles
  • 100% hand MIG-welded for strength and durability

Jeep Tent – Smittybilt Overlander and Overlander XL http://www.jeepdaily.com/jeep-tent-smittybilt-overlander-overlander-xl/ Wed, 18 Apr 2018 03:52:35 +0000 http://www.jeepdaily.com/?p=1066 The rooftop Jeep tent is one of the coolest accessories out there right now. I find myself watching endless YouTube videos of people talking about them, popping them up, putting them down, and I think I will have to buy one very soon.

jeep-tent-overlander

The first company I am looking at is Smittybilt. Smittybilt makes the Overlander rooftop tent and the Overlander XL rooftop tent. The Overlander tent is built to fit on top of a proper Jeep roof rack. It comes in tan, is waterproof and is made of heavy-duty 600D ripstop polyester. Inside you’ll find an LED strip light, a 60mm high-density foam mattress with a removable cover so you can wash it and they say it sleeps 2-3 people. I would comfortably say it sleeps two skinny people. I made this diagram so you can see how it lines up with a full-size mattress.

smittybilt-jeep-tent-dimensions

The only thing you need to know is these need a proper roof rack to live on. One thing I was confused about is that most roof racks say they will only hold up to 300lbs or so. Well, a helpful user over at r/Jeep explained this to me. Roof racks have two load ratings: static and moving. For instance, the Kargo Master Congo Cage has a moving rating of 350lbs and a static rating of 650 lbs.  So keep that weight limit in mind if you think it will be a problem. Smittybilt also sells jeep tent bundles that come with the tent and roof rack in one. Here’s a longterm review I found of someone who owns this Smittybilt jeep tent.

smittybilt-overlander-xl-jeep-tent

Now if that tent seems too small for your needs, Smittybilt also makes the Overlander XL jeep tent. This is probably the size that most of us actually want, but it is larger and more expensive. They say it will sleep up to 4 and I would agree with those dimensions if you are close friends and no one is over 6’4″ tall. Think of the Smittybilt Overlander XL jeep tent as a king size mattress with a twin mattress next to it. I know I sleep pretty well in a king with my wife (even if our 5-year-old jumps in with us) and having a twin size bed next to that means you have more than enough room for everyone to get a good night sleep. One issue I see is Smittybilt says this is meant to be mounted on a trailer or heavy duty roof rack so make sure your roof rack can hold the weight of the tent plus 4 grown adults if that’s how you plan on using it.

smittybilt-overlander-xl-jeep-tent-dimensions

Like the Smittybilt Overlander Jeep tent, he Overlander XL is built to last. It’s made of heavy-duty 600D ripstop polyester, is waterproof and comes with a protective cover. It also has the LED interior light, 60mm high-density foam mattress with removable cover, mosquito screens, and a telescoping aluminum ladder. You can buy the Smittybilt Overlander XL at Nomadic Offroad Supply with free shipping.

If you own one of these tents or another brand, leave us a comment and tell us what you think! Do you like it? Should we get one?

2019 Jeep Scrambler Truck to hit dealerships in April 2019! http://www.jeepdaily.com/2019-jeep-scrambler-truck-to-hit-dealerships-in-april-2019/ Fri, 30 Mar 2018 14:49:44 +0000 http://www.jeepdaily.com/?p=1056 2019-jeep-truck-delivery-date

One year from now, the 2019 Jeep Scrambler truck should be hitting dealer showrooms. That’s pretty amazing. That means from this point forward there should be more leaks, more info, and the big reveal of what the Jeep truck will look like! So I am actually in the market to purchase a Jeep Scrambler truck in 2019. There are a few factors that I am still wondering about such as off-road capability and frankly, I want this thing to look a little tougher than the test mules we have seen in spy shots. I have owned a few Jeep Wranglers and a few Ford F-150s and if I am going to buy the Jeep Scrambler it needs to be a lot more Wrangler than F150.

Here’s what we know so far. The Scrambler is rumored to come with three top options: a body-paint matched 3-piece hardtop, a black 3-piece hardtop, and a Premium black Sunrider top. For those of you too young to remember, there used to be a ton of trucks on the road that offered a topless experience and since the Full-size Bronco and Blazers have been dead for years, you just don’t get the fun with the utility anymore. This is another reason why the Jeep Scrambler is going to destroy the competition and hopefully inspire them to bring back the fun options in vehicles past.

2019-jeep-scrambler-spy-shots

We are still expecting 2 engines at a minimum with the Pentastar V6 and the 3.0L Ecodiesel V6. There is no word yet if the new turbo 4-cylinder will be found in the 2019 Jeep Scrambler truck. Time will tell. Finally, and this will depend on gear-ratios and engine choices, the Jeep truck is expected to be able to tow up to 6500lbs with a payload of 1400lbs. Not too shabby seeing that a 4-door 2018 JLU is rated at 3500lbs.

So, as long as I can take this JT down to Moab and tackle Finns & Things and Hell’s Revenge and still tow the family camper home, I will be one happy man. The Jeep Scrambler truck will probably be as close to a perfect vehicle for me as possible. If only there was a way to also get it to do 0-60 in under 5 seconds.

2018 Jeep J-Wagon Concept Vehicle http://www.jeepdaily.com/2018-jeep-j-wagon-concept-vehicle/ Wed, 21 Mar 2018 01:05:00 +0000 http://www.jeepdaily.com/?p=1045 2018-jeep-j-wagon-concept

The 2018 Jeep J-Wagon Concept is badass. It looks upscale and rugged and would look great in LA, NYC or Moab.

Starting as a Wrangler Sahara, the J-Wagon is painted a conceptual Warm Neutral Grey with warm-tinted glass, and complemented with subtle Brass Monkey touches throughout the exterior. The J-Wagon features a version of the JPP hood designed with a cutout kit to work with the available snorkel, an appropriate choice for the sealed-cabin style of the vehicle. The hood latch is Brass Monkey and further embellished with a black Willys logo.

For hardcore off-roaders, new 5-inch LED lights mount with JPP brackets to deliver commercial and military grade illumination. That trail detail is balanced with the street-appeal of a Mopar black grille pulled from a Wrangler Rubicon, and features body-color matching bezel trim. The premium Sahara bumper aligns with the vehicle’s color pattern via Brass Monkey fog lamp bezels. The J-Wagon concept also features 17-inch slot-design wheels that are also finished in Brass Monkey, a treatment chosen after receiving positive feedback in a sneak peek at the 2017 SEMA Show.

Black metal concept rock sliders guard the J-Wagon’s exterior, and a matching black metal concept JPP roof rack offers utility and functionality to fit any lifestyle. A black JPP fuel door and Orange Crush accents on the Jeep badge and tow hooks add style points. A spare 35-inch KM3 BF Goodrich tire mounts to the spare tire tailgate hinge reinforcement, and includes the JPP Center High-Mount Stop Light (CHMSL) light relocation kit.

Premium appointments are the story inside. Camel-color Katzkin leather seats give an elite feel and feature stark brown piping and plow-through inserts that mimic the triangulated grille design of the concept rock rails. Eye-level Brass Monkey trim and bezel accents on the HVAC vents, door handles and steering wheel harmonize the interior with the exterior.

2018 Jeep Jeepster Concept Vehicle http://www.jeepdaily.com/2018-jeep-jeepster-concept-vehicle/ Wed, 21 Mar 2018 00:57:28 +0000 http://www.jeepdaily.com/?p=1041 2018-jeep-jeepster-concept

The 2018 Jeep Jeepster concept vehicle will debut at the 2018 Easter Jeep Safari. With some cool paint and a big dip into the Jeep Performance Parts catalog, you too could build a modern Jeep Jeepster.

The original’s classic two-tone graphic theme is mirrored on its modern-day counterpart with a Firecracker Red body, set off by a Bright White concept hardtop, chopped by two inches, and a Bright White custom windshield raked back 2.5 degrees to create a cropped, compact appearance. The customized windshield maintains the all-new Wrangler’s convenient fold-down feature. Bright White also accents the perimeter of the Rubicon fender flares, and an upper portion of the concept half doors. Jeep badging is replaced with a tri-color Jeepster hard badge.

The Jeepster deftly balances concept possibilities with a range of presently available Jeep Performance Parts, including a JPP hood and graphic, without the optional cold-air intake or snorkel. LED off-road lights in 5-inch and 7-inch applications illuminate the trail for the Jeepster, shining brightly at up to 8,000 lumens. The LED lights are mounted to the A-pillar via light brackets. The Rubicon steel bumper features premium production LED fog lamps.

A 2-inch lift kit and 2.5-inch diameter aluminum body shocks work with oversized, 37-inch BF Goodrich KO2 tires to raise the Jeepster above off-road obstacles. Beadlock-capable 17-inch wheels are accented by body-color matching Firecracker Red beadlock trim rings. Additional items from the JPP portfolio include a black fuel door, grab handles and all-weather floor mats.

Inside the Jeepster, a concept tubular roll cage replaces the sport bar and an additional 37-inch tire is secured with a custom in-cabin spare tire carrier. The interior meshes off-road functionality with premium features, including black Katzkin leather seats with Rubicon Red Jeep grille logos embroidered on the seatbacks, and Rubicon Red accent stitching on the seat bolsters. The instrument panel inserts are Firecracker Red to tie in with the exterior.

Relocation of the spare tire to the cabin provides an opportunity for another custom touch: concept storage packs mounted to the tailgate for transport of gear and supplies such as food, water and tools. The packs feature a split design to accommodate the rearview camera. A concept rock step — a unique combination of a rock rail/side step — completes the Jeepster.
